The Honourable Justice Michael Slattery AM AM (Mil) RAN – Member
Justice Slattery was appointed a Member of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal on 25 November 2021.
Justice Slattery was admitted as a barrister in New South Wales in 1978 and appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1992. He served as President of the New South Wales Bar Association between 2005 and 2007. In 2009 he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, serving since then in the Court’s Equity Division. He is now the Admiralty Judge of the Court.
Justice Slattery enlisted in the Sydney University Regiment in 1972, serving as an infantryman for two years. In 1990 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant (Supply Officer – Legal) in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve. During the years 1990 to 2002 he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and then Commander, appearing in courts martial and advising Command and defence members. In 2002 he was appointed as the Head of Panel of the New South Wales Navy Reserve Legal Panel. In 2004 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.
In March 2010 on promotion to Commodore he was appointed Deputy Judge Advocate General – Navy. In July 2014 on promotion to Rear Admiral he was appointed as Judge Advocate General of the Australian Defence Force, a position in which he served until July 2021. He has the Australian Active Service Medal (Iraq 2003 Clasp) for operational service. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in 2019 and in the General Division in 2021.
